We all dream of a better life—better weather, a better home, a better future. Sometimes we long for something we once had, like a former neighborhood, a close community, or a season in life when things felt whole. That deep longing is more than nostalgia. It’s a reflection of something built into all of us: a desire to return to the way life was meant to be.
That’s how the story of the Bible begins. It starts not with rules or religion, but with beauty, intimacy, and purpose. It starts with Eden.
A Garden of Delight
In Genesis 2, we read:
“Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.”
—Genesis 2:8
The word Eden means delight or pleasure. It wasn’t just a garden—it was the first home for humanity, designed as a paradise where people and God lived together in harmony. It was, quite literally, heaven on earth. God placed Adam and Eve in the middle of the garden, and at the center of it all was something deeply symbolic: the Tree of Life.
“In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
—Genesis 2:9
This wasn’t just about fruit. It was about choice. Would humanity trust God as the source of life and wisdom, or try to define good and evil for themselves?
Bearing God’s Image
Genesis also reveals something stunning about who we are:
“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
—Genesis 2:7
And in Genesis 1, we read:
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
—Genesis 1:27
We were created in the image of God with his very breath, giving us life—to carry His presence, represent His character, and live in relationship with Him and others. That’s why later in the Bible, God forbids idols and images. Humans are the living image-bearers of God. We’re not divine, but we are created with divine purpose. That means how we treat one another matters deeply. Every person you meet bears the image of God—worthy of dignity, love, and respect.
The Tree of Life and the Temptation
God gave Adam and Eve access to the Tree of Life—a symbol of divine nourishment, thriving, and flourishing. But He also warned them not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil:
“You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
—Genesis 2:16–17
The temptation wasn’t about fruit. It was about independence—believing we know better than God. It’s a temptation that still affects all of us today. Like the 16-year-old who hides a speeding ticket thinking he’s avoiding trouble, we often think we can manage life on our own. But it catches up with us. We aren’t meant to define right and wrong apart from God. We’re meant to trust Him.
The Water of Life
Genesis describes a river flowing from Eden:
“A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.”
—Genesis 2:10
This imagery—of water flowing out to nourish the world—echoes throughout the Bible. Jesus later said:
“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
—John 7:37–38
And in Revelation, at the end of the Bible, we see Eden restored—God dwelling with His people, and the river of life flowing again. The story comes full circle.
The Message of the Bible
The Bible isn’t primarily about us getting into heaven. It’s about getting heaven into us. It’s the story of how God is restoring His presence in humanity and renewing the world.
That includes you. When you trust God—really trust Him—you begin the journey back to Eden. Back to flourishing. Back to walking with God.
