LIVING AS A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD TODAY

TEACHING

When you say yes to Jesus, you don’t just receive forgiveness—you receive a whole new identity.

The Bible calls this becoming part of “a royal priesthood” and “a holy nation” (1 Peter 2:9, NIV). In other words, you join a new community with a new purpose. You become one of God’s people, chosen not just to be blessed, but to bring blessing to others.

In 1 Peter 2:4–12, the apostle Peter gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to live as the new people of God:

“You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ… But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
—1 Peter 2:5, 9 (NIV)

Let’s break this down into four truths about who we are now—and how we’re called to live.

1. God’s Temple Is No Longer a Building. It’s His People.

In the Old Testament, God’s presence was found in places like the tabernacle and the temple. These were sacred spaces, set apart for worship. But now, through Jesus, God’s Spirit lives in His people.

Paul writes:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you…?”
—1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)

You and I—ordinary followers of Jesus—are called “living stones” being built into a spiritual temple. Wherever we go, we carry the presence of God. That means we don’t need a physical building to worship or serve—we are the place where God’s Spirit dwells. We are the church. We are His temple.

2. The Priesthood Isn’t for a Few. It Includes All Believers.

In ancient Israel, only priests had special access to God and offered sacrifices on behalf of others. But now, all followers of Jesus are part of a “royal priesthood.” That means:

  • We can approach God directly through prayer.
  • We can offer spiritual sacrifices—like worship, service, and generosity.
  • We’re called to represent God to the world and intercede for others.

This is a radical shift. You don’t have to be a pastor or religious leader to serve God powerfully. If you belong to Jesus, you are already part of His priesthood.

3. God’s Commands Are Written on Our Hearts.

Instead of following rules written on stone tablets, we now follow the voice of the Holy Spirit. God promised through the prophet Ezekiel:

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you… I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees.”
—Ezekiel 36:26–27 (NIV)

Through the Holy Spirit, God empowers us to live in a way that honors Him. It’s not about trying harder. It’s about staying close to Jesus and letting His Spirit guide our choices, convict our hearts, and strengthen our love for others.

4. We Carry God’s Presence Into the World.

Peter writes:

“Live such good lives among the pagans that… they may see your good deeds and glorify God.”
—1 Peter 2:12 (NIV)

We are God’s mobile temple and mobile priesthood. Wherever we go—our jobs, neighborhoods, schools, grocery stores—we bring His presence with us. We show the world what God is like by the way we live, serve, forgive, and love.

It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Small acts of kindness, compassion, generosity, and justice matter deeply in God’s kingdom. When we serve others, humanity flourishes.
