“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”

Have you ever watched a show like America’s Got Talent and thought, “I’ve got nothing like that”? Maybe you’ve seen someone balance on a stack of chairs, hit operatic high notes, or even crush walnuts with… well, you get the idea. We admire gifted people—but deep down, many of us believe we’re not one of them. We think, I’m not talented. I have nothing special to offer.

But that’s not true. Not at all. God says something very different.

You are gifted.

Romans 12 is one of the clearest places in Scripture that reveals this truth. Paul writes:

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”

In the Old Testament, God’s people brought their best—grain, oil, lambs—to the temple as an offering. But Paul now urges believers to bring something new to God: ourselves. Not our old selves, weighed down by guilt and shame, but our new selves—the ones made alive in Christ.

When you come to Jesus, something profound happens. You’re no longer a slave to sin. Paul explains this earlier in Romans 8:

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.”

Before knowing Jesus, we didn’t know any better than to sin. We were unknowingly obligated to our sinful desires because we didn’t yet see an alternative. But in Christ, we see the truth. We are set free from the obligation to sin—and now we’re free to live by the Spirit. That freedom opens the door for us to truly live—and to use our God-given gifts to bless others.

Paul continues in Romans 12:

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy… if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach… if it is to encourage, then give encouragement… if it is giving, then give generously…”

Your gift may not seem flashy. You may not think of yourself as particularly talented. But Scripture says otherwise. Everyone in Christ has been gifted—and your gift matters. The point of your gift isn’t self-fulfillment; it’s to serve and strengthen others. Just like a body needs all its parts working together, the Church needs you. You are necessary.

Maybe you have the gift of encouragement. Or leadership. Or mercy. Or teaching. Or craftsmanship. Or hospitality. Or listening. Or storytelling. Or praying. Whatever your gift is, the call is the same:

Give your gift away.

A gift only becomes a gift when it’s given. And when you give your gift in love—offering it back to God by serving others—you’re worshiping. You’re building up the Body. You’re stepping into the purpose God created you for.

So let’s stop believing the lie that we have nothing to offer. You are gifted. And your gift matters more than you know.
