God is love, and who He is shapes everything.

Knowing God is at the core of being a Christian. God is not a vague force or distant power. He is a living, personal Being who reveals Himself through Scripture, through Jesus, and through His Spirit. God is love, and everything He does flows from that love. He is also holy (completely pure and good), and we can trust that His ways are always right. God is not distant. He is close to the brokenhearted and desires a relationship with each of us.

God is the Creator of all things. He made the universe with wisdom and care. He made humanity in His image, male and female, blessing them and entrusting them with purpose. Being created in God’s image means you have intrinsic worth and are called to reflect His character in the world around you.

God is eternal and spirit, without beginning or end and not limited by time or space. God is Father, Son, and Spirit—three persons in perfect unity—who invite us into a loving and life-changing relationship. God is just, opposing sin and injustice, and is also merciful, offering grace, healing, and forgiveness.

God is sovereign, meaning He reigns over all things and nothing is beyond His control. Yet, in His wisdom and love, He gives us free agency: the real ability to choose how we respond to Him and live our lives. He desires our willing love, not forced obedience. Nor does He orchestrate every aspect of our lives. He is fully engaged while we are fully free.

God is faithful. He keeps His promises and never gives up on us. You can trust Him completely. The more you learn who God is, the more your life will be shaped by love, grace, truth, and hope. The goal of your journey with Jesus is not just to know more about God but to know Him more personally and walk with Him daily.

This section will help you explore who God is. You’ll discover His love, holiness, justice, nearness, creativity, power, and mercy. And you’ll discover how He invites you into deeper trust, worship, and relationship with Him.

Growing Closer to God

These spiritual practices will help you keep your relationship with God alive and healthy. Try one or more of the following each day:

  • Begin your day by meditating on a quality of God (compassion, faithfulness, justice, etc.).
  • In prayer, thank God for who He is, not just what He does.
  • Reflect on how your life might look different if it were shaped more by God’s character.
  • Memorize a Psalm
  • Try Lectio Divina again. Read this passage three times slowly and out loud, each time pondering prayerfully what it is saying and how God might be speaking to you through it.

    Psalm 34:8
“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.”
