The New You

We spend a lot of time trying to present the best version of ourselves. From New Year’s resolutions to social media filters, we aim to look put-together, polished, and perfect—on the outside. But underneath our curated images and attempts at self-improvement, many of us feel deeply unknown. And sometimes, we’re not even sure we know ourselves.

The good news is this: God knows you—completely, intimately, and lovingly. Every thought, every memory, every motivation. And He doesn’t turn away. In fact, He draws closer.

“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me.”
—Psalm 139:1 (NIV)

The Hebrew word for “searched” here, ḥā·qǎr, means to explore, examine, and discover. Imagine a careful researcher analyzing every detail, not to criticize, but to understand. God searches you like that. He doesn’t just glance at your life—He studies you with compassion and care, uncovering the essential truth of who you are.

“You perceive my thoughts from afar.”
—Psalm 139:2 (NIV)

God knows what you’re thinking—even when you don’t fully understand it yourself. He perceives and understands the layers beneath your fears, desires, and decisions. Maybe that’s a little terrifying. But it’s also incredibly freeing. Because God doesn’t just see what you’ve done. He understands why.

“You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.”
—Psalm 139:3 (NIV)

The word “discern” comes from a root that means to scatter and analyze every piece. Like Iron Man’s holographic tech, it’s as if God pauses your life, spreads out the moments, and says, “Ah, this is why you do that. It goes back to this conversation when you were thirteen… this pain you still carry… this belief you never questioned.” And then, God hems you in.

“You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.”
—Psalm 139:5 (NIV)

He surrounds you, not to trap you, but to enfold you. Like a mother hen tucks her chicks beneath her wings, or like someone securing cargo with straps to keep it safe. You can’t hide from His gaze—but you don’t have to.

You don’t need to be afraid of being known by God. He knows your every flaw, every wound, every dream, every longing—and still, He chooses you. Accepts you. Pursues you. This isn’t a shame-based gaze. This isn’t the judgmental scrutiny you may have felt from peers, parents, or the pressure of social media. It’s the gaze of grace. It’s the look of love.

When Jeff VanVonderan tells the story of Mary in Tired of Trying to Measure Up, he paints a picture of someone crushed by the weight of never being good enough. Many of us have felt that too—especially in religious spaces. But God’s voice doesn’t echo those same expectations. He already knows the real you, and He loves that you.

“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”
—Psalm 139:6 (NIV)

The question now is not whether God knows you. He does. The question is:

Do you know yourself?

Do you understand who you are and why? And even more—do you accept this person God so fully and deeply loves? Maybe it’s time to slow down and explore your inner life. A tool like the Enneagram can help you uncover the motivations behind your actions. A genogram might help you trace how your family story has shaped you. Or maybe you need to examine how shame has distorted your view of God and yourself.

Because when we start to know ourselves—and see ourselves as God sees us—we can finally live in the freedom of being fully known and fully loved.

Reflection Question:
What’s one part of yourself—past, present, or hidden—that you’ve tried to hide from God or others? How might your life change if you trusted that God sees that part and loves you anyway?

Prayer:
God, thank You for searching me and knowing me. Help me to believe that I am fully known and still fully loved by You. Give me courage to know myself with honesty and grace to accept what You already embrace. Amen.
